What is an agent-ready store?

An agent-ready store is one an AI agent can find, read and understand without guessing: crawlers are allowed, price and stock are in the data, and the feed and terms are clear. No platform owns the term. Here are ten open criteria you can test on any store.

The checklist at a glance

The test itself is free and works on any store: check your store.

“Evidence” is our own reading of how firmly the sources tie the item to a result: the operator’s own docs, a recommendation only, or a measurement showing little effect.

The ten criteria

1. AI search crawlers allowed in robots.txt

Why it matters
OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Training crawlers are a separate choice, and you can refuse them and stay findable.
How to check
Open /robots.txt and read the group that applies to OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot. A firewall or CDN bot rule can refuse them too, and robots.txt will not show that.
Waise
Yes. Each store’s robots.txt names the answer engines one by one. The owner can refuse any of them in the admin.
On Shopify
A default file you can change with a robots.txt.liquid template. Shopify calls that an unsupported customization.
On other platforms
Find where your platform edits robots.txt, then check your CDN’s bot rules.

2. Product content in the server’s HTML

Why it matters
Google says server-side or pre-rendering is still a great idea and that some bots cannot run JavaScript. An agent that cannot run yours sees an empty page.
How to check
View the page source of a product, not the rendered page, and search for the name and the price.
Waise
Yes. Storefront pages are rendered on the server.
On Shopify
Liquid themes render on the server. A headless build depends on how it was made.
On other platforms
Client-side storefronts need server rendering or pre-rendering added.

3. Product JSON-LD with price, availability and identifiers

Why it matters
This is how a machine reads what you sell without guessing. Google requires price and currency for merchant listings and recommends availability and a GTIN.
How to check
Find the script of type application/ld+json on a product page. Look for name, offers with price, priceCurrency and availability, and a gtin, mpn or sku.
Waise
Yes. Product or ProductGroup, availability per variant, and a GTIN only when its check digit is valid. The identifiers are as good as what the merchant fills in.
On Shopify
Liquid has a structured_data filter that outputs Product or ProductGroup. Whether it is on the page depends on your theme.
On other platforms
Use your platform’s SEO settings or a plugin, then confirm the output in the page source.

4. A product feed in a spec agents read

Why it matters
A feed gives price and stock more freshly than a crawl. OpenAI’s merchant page says feeds give control over accuracy and freshness, and Google says Merchant Center can help products appear in AI responses.
How to check
Not visible from outside, because feeds are usually private. Open Merchant Center’s diagnostics, and compare your file to OpenAI’s required fields.
Waise
Partial. Google Merchant Center, Meta and TikTok feeds are built in. There is also an ACP-style JSON feed, but it is served at a URL, while OpenAI’s onboarding is by upload for approved partners. Waise does not upload to OpenAI for you.
On Shopify
Shopify Catalog feeds its AI channels, per Shopify, and sellers are integrated with ChatGPT without extra setup, per OpenAI. This is Shopify’s strongest point.
On other platforms
Start with Merchant Center, then apply at chatgpt.com/merchants.

5. Shipping and returns in machine-readable form

Why it matters
An agent comparing two shops needs the delivery cost and the return window. Google lists shippingDetails and hasMerchantReturnPolicy as recommended.
How to check
In the product JSON-LD, look inside offers for shippingDetails and hasMerchantReturnPolicy.
Waise
Yes, on product pages, from the store’s policy settings.
On Shopify
Depends on your theme and apps. Check a product page with the checker.
On other platforms
Add both to the Offer if your platform allows it. Otherwise keep clear, linked policy pages.

6. A checkout protocol: ACP or UCP

Why it matters
These let an agent complete a purchase in a structured way. Both are young: OpenAI has moved away from a standalone Instant Checkout, and Google limits embedded checkout to approved merchants.
How to check
ACP needs credentials, so it cannot be seen from outside. For UCP, request /.well-known/ucp on the store. Our checker does this unless the store names an MCP endpoint.
Waise
Partial. The merchant side of ACP is built, off by default, and only for stores on Stripe. It needs credentials from OpenAI, and ACP is not a route to in-chat sales today. UCP is not built.
On Shopify
Shopify co-developed UCP with Google and says WebMCP tools let browser agents reach checkout after the buyer approves. It is ahead of Waise here.
On other platforms
Most merchants should wait for their platform. Do not build this alone yet.

7. An MCP or agent endpoint

Why it matters
It lets an agent search and read your catalog through tools instead of scraping pages. MCP is an open protocol for exactly that.
How to check
Request /.well-known/mcp.json or /.well-known/ucp. Note that a file missing at one address does not prove there is no endpoint.
Waise
Partial. Each store has a public buyer MCP server and a discovery card, with tools to search, read a product and make a checkout link. It stays closed until the owner opens the catalog in the admin. There is no WebMCP.
On Shopify
Shopify says WebMCP tools are on every Liquid and Hydrogen storefront and checkout.
On other platforms
Ask your platform for its plan. A self-built MCP server is real work, so finish the items above first.

8. llms.txt (low evidence, not scored)

Why it matters
Be honest about this one. Ahrefs found that 97% of the llms.txt files it studied got no requests in May 2026, and Google Search ignores the file. It is cheap, so publish one if you like, and expect little.
How to check
Request /llms.txt, then check your server logs to see whether anyone reads it.
Waise
Yes, every open store publishes one. We do not count it toward readiness.
On Shopify
We did not verify a default llms.txt on Shopify. Use the checker on your store.
On other platforms
Optional. Check your logs before you spend time on it.

9. An XML sitemap with the product pages

Why it matters
It is the simplest list of what exists. Crawlers use it to find new products sooner.
How to check
Open /sitemap.xml or the Sitemap line in robots.txt, and confirm that product addresses are listed.
Waise
Yes, generated for every store.
On Shopify
Yes. Shopify says every store generates a sitemap.xml.
On other platforms
Most platforms make one. Confirm yours lists products.

10. Stable URLs and fast responses

Why it matters
An agent that quotes a dead link, or times out, moves on. Our 2-second line is a rule of thumb, not a published limit.
How to check
Confirm each product has one canonical URL and that renamed products redirect. Measure the first response from outside your own region.
Waise
Yes for URLs: one address per product, and a redirect table for old addresses. We publish no speed figure here. Run the checker on a live Waise store.
On Shopify
We did not measure Shopify’s speed. Use the checker on a store you care about.
On other platforms
Set up redirects before you rename products or move platforms.

Who this suits, and who it doesn’t

A good fit

  • Merchants who want to know what an agent sees in their store, on any platform
  • Anyone choosing a platform who wants a neutral list to compare
  • Agencies that want a shared audit for clients

Pick something else

  • If you want Agentic Storefronts and Shopify Catalog today, stay on Shopify
  • If you need UCP now: Waise does not support it
  • If you want a promise of AI-driven sales: the evidence is not there yet

Questions

Is agent-ready a Shopify term?

Shopify uses the phrase: its Fall ’26 developer post says every Shopify store is agent-ready by default. Nobody owns the idea. This checklist is an open way to test it on any platform, Shopify included.

Is my store agent-ready if it passes everything?

It means an agent can find, read and understand your store. It does not promise sales. Evidence on AI shopping is still young, and the checklist says where it is weak.

Do I need llms.txt?

No. Ahrefs found 97% of the llms.txt files it studied received no requests in May 2026, and Google Search ignores the file. It is cheap to publish, but it is not scored here.

Can I reuse this checklist?

Yes. It is licensed CC BY 4.0, so you can copy, adapt and publish it with a credit and a link to this page.
