How do I set up my own automatic rules?
Make a rule that waits for something to happen in your store, checks conditions, then sends an email, tags a customer, notifies you or creates a personal code.
Step by step
- Open Marketing → Automatic mail → Custom flows and click "New rule".
- Name the rule and choose what starts it under "When".
- Under "How long to wait", set a delay in minutes, hours or days. Leave it empty to run right away.
- Under "Only if", add conditions with "+ Condition", for example an order total above an amount, or a certain product.
- Under "Then", add what happens with "+ Action": send the customer an email, tag the customer, tell you something, create a personal discount code, send a text, or send to an outside tool such as Make or Zapier.
- Click "Save".
You can also describe the rule in words, for example "when someone buys a second time, tag them and send a thank-you", and click "Build the rule for me". The rule opens in the form for you to check. Nothing is saved or sent until you click "Save".
Ready-made rules
"Turn on the recommended pack" adds a starter set: a thank-you with a personal code after the first order, a VIP tag for a big order, a returning-customer tag, abandoned-cart reminders, a help email after a declined payment, a review request after the order arrives and a win-back code after 60 days without a purchase. The "Rule gallery" has these and more. Each rule can be switched off or changed.
Things to know
- A rule with no email subject sends the customer nothing. It only does its other actions.
- Conditions are checked at the moment the rule runs, not when it enters the queue.
- A rule that sends a personal discount code is a marketing offer, so it goes only to people who agreed to marketing email.
- If you create a personal code, put the tag {{discount_code}} in the email, or the customer will not see it.
- The "Run log" shows every run: who it was for, what was done, and why it was skipped if it was.
- Your plan sets how many automations can be active at once. A new rule past that limit is saved switched off.
The wording of the order emails (confirmation, shipping, arrival) is edited under By order stage.
Questions
Can a rule send to someone who unsubscribed?
Marketing rules go only to people who agreed to marketing email, and every marketing email carries an unsubscribe link.
