How do I create a discount code?
Create a code shoppers type at checkout, or a discount that applies by itself, with a minimum, a limit and an end date.
Step by step
- Open Marketing → Discounts and sales → Discount codes, or click New in the top bar and choose "Discount code".
- Click "+ New code".
- Type a word in "Code", or click "Random".
- Choose the "Discount type": percentage, fixed amount, free shipping, or buy X get Y. Enter how much.
- Choose what it applies to (the entire order, specific products or specific collections) and who can use it (everyone, customers with a tag, first order only, or once per customer).
- Set "Minimum order", "Usage limit", "Starts on" and "Valid until" as you need.
- Click "Create code".
The table lists every code with its type, value, minimum order, number of uses, end date and an "Active" switch. Turning the switch off stops the code at once and keeps its history.
A discount with no code
Click "+ Automatic discount" to make a discount that applies by itself in the cart and at checkout. You give it a name, and shoppers see that name on the discount line.
Good to know
- The code itself cannot be changed once it exists, because customers already have it. To use a different word, create a new code.
- A code marked "wide open" has no expiry, no usage limit and no minimum. Anyone who guesses it can use it as often as they like.
- "Combinations" controls whether the code combines with other discounts. When several discounts apply and not all combine, the shopper gets the one that saves them the most.
- The margin guard at the bottom of the window warns you if a code would take a product below your minimum multiplier. Saving then asks for confirmation with a reason.
- Your plan sets how many codes can be active at once. A new code past that limit is saved switched off, and the screen tells you.
Tip Pop-up forms can hand out a code to people who leave their email. Create the code first, then choose it in the pop-up. See pop-ups.
Questions
Where do I see how a code performed?
The table shows the number of uses and the amount given. The Revenue report also lists the discount codes shoppers entered.
Why is my new code switched off?
If your plan’s limit on active codes is full, a new code is saved as a draft (off). Turn another code off or change plan.
